May 17, 2003 -- NJ Traffic is so bad that is delayed America's largest lottery drawing
Saturday night for almost two hours -- even though the drawing was held in Iowa.
The Powerball Lottery for 23 states, D.C. and the Virgin Islands (but not New Jersey), was
scheduled for drawing at 10:59 p.m. in De Moines Iowa. Ten million tickets were sold
with an estimated $18 million jackpot. The drawing was delayed for one hour and 45
minutes.
Two sets of Virgin Island ticket records didn't match up with one set located in V.I., and
the other with its contractor Clifton Based IGT Online. When this happens, officials
secure both sets. Normally they match, but on Saturday night, the security official was
trapped in traffic and his back-up was away on military duty.
The NJ DOT closed two of the three lanes on Route 3 westbound to repair a bridge over a NJ
Transit line in Clifton causing a traffic jam. And among the many steaming drivers
was the security executive for a lottery contractor in Clifton -- who had to be in his
office before the drawing could begin. A 30 minute trip took two hours.
